Forming Sweet Defeat composer and multi-instrumentalist Tom Wouters (Flat Earth Society, Crap Squeezer, Flick Flack Bat) gathered congenial minds with gitarist Bert Dockx (Flying Horseman, Dans Dans, Score Man, Strand) and cellist Lode Vercampt (Kris Defoort, duo with Bart Maris) for a rather atypical trio. Together they create 'chamber jazz and beyond', which you might just as well take literally. Or how composition, surprise and tension can be synonymous. No well-trodden paths, but astonishing and above all adventurous music.

Voor Sweet Defeat verzamelt componist en multi-instrumentalist Tom Wouters (Flat Earth Society) gelijkgestemde zielen als gitarist Bert Dockx (Flying Horseman, Dans Dans) en cellist Lode Vercampt (Radio KUKAorkest, Brick Quartet) voor een atypisch trio. Samen brengen ze 'kamerjazz & beyond' en dit mag je vooral letterlijk nemen. Of hoe compositie, verrassing en spanning toch synoniem kunnen zijn. Geen platgetreden paden, maar verrassende en bovenal avontuurlijke muziek.

"Sweet Defeat treads a territory similar to that explored by Tom Waits. They find nobility in the carny's caravan of song. Maybe the musicians are a bit tipsy, their manner is brusque, but the dirt under their fingernails cannot disguise the loveliness of a composition like "Maybe This Is Shit," an inebriated blues, or the off-kilter circus- themed "This Enigmatic Body is Achin.'" Elsewhere, the trio plots a succinct groove on "Thin Din" that would make Django Reinhardt grin, doses the ears with the barking hardcore "The Squirrel Apologizes," and weaves a fitting theme song with "The Vomiting Beauty."
