"A culturally improbable collaboration of Brazilian, Portuguese, and Belgian musicians, the Ifa y Xango Tentet is easily one of the most adventurous large ensembles operating anywhere in the world today. Co-operative in nature, and playing entirely their own original compositions, the group's vision, as captured on Twice Left Handed / Shavings encompasses jazz, rock, post-rock, doom / sludge, free improvisation, musique concrète, and electronic dance music in equal measure. This might seem a complete mish-mosh from this admittedly inadequate portrayal, but Ifa y Xango's music is crafted with exceptional discipline, focus and clarity: traits rarely found in improvisational music these days. Each track on this too-brief album stands alone as a definitive artistic statement. It's almost as if each track was made by a different band—a sampler of sorts—yet the musicians' individual personalities shine through.

Three of the musicians involved here —keyboardist Seppe Gebruers, bassist Laurens Smet, and saxophonist Viktor Perdieus — are members of Bambi Pang Pang, an acoustic jazz quartet featuring jazz legend Andrew Cyrille on drums. Ifa y Xango drummer Joao Lobo is known for his work as a bandleader and as a sideman with Enrico Rava, Scott Fields, and Roswell Rudd. But none of these musical associations mean anything in the context of Ifa y Xango. The music on Twice Left Handed / Shavings really stands apart from jazz, or even avant-garde jazz. There is really something else going on here.

The album's centerpiece is its final cut, "Shavings," a nearly 15-minute long exploration of heavy electronic improvised funk that expands on the experimental edges of Miles Davis' On The Corner (Columbia Records, 1972). Soloists keep their statements concise, peeping in and out at will from the dense interweave of percussion, bass and electronics. Superimposed on this deftly pulsating polyrhythmic sound collage are remarkably sweet melodic passages: some of which recall the dulcet tones of Haitian or Guadeloupean dance music. It's bizarre, but it works.

The preceding four tracks dip into completely distinct and well-defined sound worlds. The twin drumsets of Lobo and Ruben Pensaert open "Kamchatka" at an impossibly slow tempo (the doom / sludge influence mentioned above). The plodding beat is overlain by a series of enormous ensemble chords that dissolve into drones: some instruments (Moog bass, reeds, brass) sustaining through several pulses, others (guitar, percussion) dying out more rapidly. The granularity of the sound itself sustains interest, though Perdieus and Niels Van Heertum blow ecstatic solos above the din.

The droning twang and scraped chords of Bert Cools' and Ruben Machtelinckx' guitars on "Fjaka" evokes images of post-apocalyptic, blown-out desert landscapes. Strains of post-rock also inform "Moedwil," a brief almost ambient piece that certainly could have been extended a bit. "Gamma" starts out as an delicate, minimal drone piece for saxophones and euphonium, but gets subverted by blasts of percussion and electronics. The horns prevail to the end, however, establishing an icily beautiful soundscape.

Ifa y Xango are clearly thinking well beyond the boundaries of what is known and accepted within any given musical genre, be it jazz or rock or whatever. Monumentally trangressive, the music on Twice Left Handed / Shavings will delight some, and infuriate others. This album is easily one of the most adventurous, daring, and accomplished recordings of 2015."

Twice Left Handed, opgedeeld in vier stukken, biedt boeiende soundscapes. Opener Kamchatka is trage rock.

"All art is retrospective, insofar as past experience goes into the creation of it -Dan Morgenstern So the problem as always is finding the words to say something about the music. Sometimes it is easy, when the music is programmatic and the title tells us what it describes. Take The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Dukas and it is not to hard to picture Mickey Mouse splitting the brooms and succumbing to the waterflow. Nothing wrong with this but usually the a priori goal doesn't lead to the most exciting music. Titles can better be slapped upon a piece afterwards. What are we gonna call this ? No idea. Leave it at that. Let's call this. So Ifa y Xango decided to call their record "twice left handed\\shavings". I have no truck with that.

Song titles are Kamchatka, Gamma and that's ok. It is the music that tells me something that can't be put in words. I can give you something like: Great big hunks of sound are thrown around and gradually coalesce to arrive at a slowly pulsating giant mass of a peninsula, called Kamchatka. Lame. Seppe Gebruers describes in a recent interview what he calls absolute music. There is no frame of reference, there is no cut and dried schedule set up beforehand and fulfilled up to one's best ability, so the critic can check the boxes afterwards and grade it with stars.

This music is something else. It is not music to understand. It doesn't prescribe anything. It gives you auditory signals and you are free to follow. Or not. I follow. These guys don't give us simple retrospective, they give us something way better. They offer themselves, full of the urgency of the here and now. And themselves they became through past experience, specifically through a vast array of available music, call it dubstep, call it musique concrete, call it electronic trance, call it what you will. "I try to master the two : control and the lack of it" is what Seppe says and he manages this quite well. So let's have some facts: Ifa y Xango are a number of musicians based in Belgium and Brazil.

The group was founded in 2010 with all of the seven musicians in the band playing acoustic instruments and self- composed music at the time. Since releasing their debut album Abraham, which was elected as "Best debut album" by the New York City Jazz Record in 2013, they have expanded the band with three new members. The group is proud to present their upcoming second album "twice left handed \\ shavings", inspired by the band's love for experimental electronic dance music, trance music and musique concrète on El Negocito Records. And let's have an impression: Gamma starts way way back, nice unisono lines, slightly raffled at the edges. The ageless contemplative mood. Once again memories from many musics strive to attach to names and fail while the song transforms through a nervous DJ Shadow outburst into a shimmering battle between industrial noise and Hassell horns.

Does this tell you something? I hope not. The brain makes up a lot of this, even literally: it creates the missing harmonics here. The music is just there and wants you to be there too, without preconception. And quite soon there is the jazz face : As far as my own jazz face it goes/ –and don't tell me you don't have one –/it hasn't changed that much/since its debut in 1957./It's nothing special, easy enough to spot/in a corner of any club on any given night./You know it, – the reptilian squint,/lips pursed, jaw clenched tight,/and, most essential, the whole/head furiously, yet almost imperceptibly/nodding/in total and absolute agreement. - Billy Collins The flipside by the way will bring any house down. And up again. Absolute agreement indeed."

"Interesting mix of dissonance and drone from this ensemble of wind instruments, guitars, keyboards and electronic effects. Even when it growls, there's a comforting nature to the music. Something different."

"Ifa y Xango has something cool coming up. The ten-piece band with a huge set-up (drums, percussion, wind instruments, guitars, bass and keyboards) produces music that is dark, moody, jazzy and experimental. Their new album, 'twice left handed \\ shavings', features heaps of inspiring sounds, and whil it can get eclectic, it never gets tiring for the ears.

When you starting listening to this record, it's like you are walking down a long corridor. After 1:17 minutes of walking with drum sounds around you, you open the door to a strange jazz café with a band playing a kind of music that feels really strange, but you get the feeling you have been waiting for this a long time.

The second track, fjaka, has a nice relaxing feel to it with some strange things happening in the background. Track 3 starts of as a bit boring, but just on the moment you want to skip the track, the music tells you "what on earth were you thinking?!". Track 4 is like a short breath you take before the last track begins.

This fifth track, shavings, has an amazing, restless start. It has some great sound textures, and while there is so much happening, everything is in its right place. Although it feels nicely balanced out, the composition on this track is one to blow your brains out. Right on the moment when your body starts to feel a seizure coming up, the band brings it down again. It's a great track to end the album with, to make the whole trip worthwhile.

Favourite track: shavings."

"Verdomd Opwindend.
